LA-based ambient rock band, Wages, has marked December 1st with a brilliant, fresh and heartwarming homage to the late Jeff Buckley. “What Will You Say” was never recorded in the studio and was strictly a live experience for Buckley fans in the late mid-1990s. Known for his incredible voice and the emotional fervor he enveloped on stage, Jeff Buckley has become a musical icon since his unfortunate death in 1997. “What Will You Say” is an intense song that possibly describes Buckley’s relationship to his father, a musician who also held a strong cult following during his career, and who died in 1975 from an accidental heroine overdose. Buckley was only a child then and in this song asks the immortal question, “What will you say when you see my face?” after he finally passes. Therefore, the track holds intense and haunting undertones that Wages has modernized while emphasizing the key aspects of the original performance. Wages’ version channels the depths of Buckley while incorporating a monumental range of emotions that can be found in The Who’s “Baba O’Reilly” and The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.”

Notes from Wages’ vocalist, Nick Byron Campbell:
“Jeff Buckley would have been 50 years old on November 17th of this year. Before his untimely passing, he wrote, demoed and performed a handful of songs that were never fully finished as recorded pieces. For his 50th birthday, we wanted to take one of those songs and record a studio version of it – not as a replacement for anything he would have or could have done, but as an homage.”
