We know; it’s everywhere. The Weeknd is everywhere. Daft Punk is everywhere. And when the three artists, Abel, Guy-Manuel, and Thomas came together and released this title track for Starboy the Weeknd’s upcoming, highly anticipated album, they produced a track that highlights both bands’ specialties. The Weeknd’s stand-up flow is backed by a nostalgic beat. It will thump listeners back to “House of Balloons” and “The Morning” (girl put in work! etc. etc.) on Trilogy. Whereas the chorus on “Starboy” also showcases Daft Punk’s signature airy synth vocals -“ah, ah ah ah” – that we have heard mesh so effortlessly with both niche acts like Julian Casablancas and Panda Bear as well as more major artists such as Pharrell and now The Weeknd. All in all, this collaboration worked. It seems like the perfect title track; not an earth shattering dance tune like “Can’t Feel My Face” or “One More Time” but something that opens the listener up to whatever the hell Weekend has in toll for us.
ps. Does anyone hear a little Jeremih “Birthday Sex” in this track a bit? We couldn’t help ourselves.
