During a recent Spotify Session, former Walkmen lead singer, Hamilton Leithauser, joined together with Rostam Batmanglij – Vampire Weekend’s former “secret sauce” (according to Pitchfork) – and recorded a refreshing yet nostalgic homage to Nobel Prize winner, Bob Dylan. With their debut record, I Had A Dream That You Were Mine, out this past November, both artists are fulfilling their need for a new start – a separation from long histories with widely popular indie-rock bands. In this cover of “Mr Tambourine Man,” Leithauser’s husky vocals touch on Dylan’s nasally tone, but expand through layered harmonies that sound as if they are truly cycling through a set if mental smoke rings. Rostam – an experienced producer – offers a modern flare with a sparking current of literal tambourine and acoustic guitar. The flowing bass line fills instrumental gaps as Leithauser honors Dylan’s imaginative lyrics and the breathtaking images they provoke. Listen; dive into a pool of reverberations and and walk through the dusty sun-lit porch door; sit in the faceless audience and read the sounds with your heart…or whatever Bob Dylan would say.
