“I’ve got a feeling that this won’t ever change / We’re gonna keep on getting older / It’s gonna keep on feeling strange.” This may be one of the most powerful and succinct lyrics we have heard all year.
Taking on life and death through a calm and haunting drawl – much like that of Angel Olsen – Julia Jacklin delivers something we can all connect to. “Don’t Let The Kids Win” is the title track and finale to her debut album released less than a month ago. All the musical components of heartbroken understanding are here: alt-country storytelling, detailed hindsight, low dreamy vocals set over the slow cut of an electric guitar. This tune will make you think back to all the things that you still can’t change no matter how hard you try. But overall, Jacklin shows us how to move on without erasing the past. Family, uncertainty, change: all of this makes us who we are.
