Jenny Hval’s most recent album, Blood Bitch was critically acclaimed making its way onto many of the Top-Album lists of the year. The record was influenced by 70s horror films; you can actually hear her talking about it in the opening to “The Great Undressing”: “What’s this album about Jenny? / It’s about vampires…it’s about blood.” Through disjointed 80s synth-pop, unique rhythms, and thematic heart, Hval has created a unified and often unsettling piece that explores the depths of desire; a term that ultimately replaces “blood.”

In “The Great Undressing” music video, a woman travels throughout an urban settling completely naked. How is her nudity portrayed by filmed passerby’s? Do their reactions seem accurate? Is it sexual? Is it natural? These are all questions that Hval wants the viewer to ponder while watching. The song itself is entirely based on desire and our dire need for it in this world – the inability to quench our thirst for it. Does this change the aim of this visual portrayal? Keep and open mind and check it out.
